Dianna Lopez’s latest video release for her song Spiraling, takes place in a lush oceanside tropical forest. It is sung in Lopez’s dreamy and ethereal voice that is grounded in questioning her lover. She’s surrounded by nature and kin, engaging in ancestral modes of bonding and healing. The camera and the characters move fluidly and cyclically as Dianna sings, “It feels like you ain’t even fighting” - she senses a lack of truth, but trusts that it’ll be revealed in time. “I’ll shine until a lie comes apart” she sings, wearing swooping green fabric among the leaves. It’s music for finding yourself by way of nature, truth, and vulnerability -- all of these things translate to care for oneself and one's relationships. Spiraling, and her recent visual “She Wolf”, are perfect for getting right with your soul and liberating yourself from whatever is weighing you down these days.

Cara Taylor: How does making music impact your health?

Dianna Lopez: Music has the ability to shift my whole mood, sad or happy, and it feels like medicine for my soul. It really helps me tune into how I’m feeling mentally, emotionally and physically.

CT: Who has taught you the most in life so far?

DL: Mama earth. She’s taught me how to really love and to have true compassion, empathy, and  patience.

More literally speaking - I think it’d have to be a compilation of everyone I’ve ever considered close to me throughout my life. With awareness, they’ve all taught me a little bit more about myself and the world. I say this because the people that surround us can be a reflection of ourselves - and what we choose to see in them is actually what we might ignore within ourselves.  

CT: Who do you make music for?

DL: At first, I make music for the deepest pits of my soul, and I’m usually writing or singing a song when I feel most inspired. But if I said I only made music for myself, that’d be a lie, because I love sharing it with others in hopes that it can inspire or make them feel something that nurtures their spirit. So it’s like a rotation between me + audience.

CT: What’s your favorite self-care practice?

DL: I love feeling pampered and creating an ambiance. So, lighting a bunch of candles and incense. Mixing up a potion in the bath - throwing in eucalyptus, rose petals, and lavender - just sitting in the hot bath, reading, writing, and singing.

CT: What are your healthy living goals?

DL: I feel like they’ll always change depending on my needs. Right now, it’s nurturing and hydrating my body by treating the foods I eat and conversations I choose to have as medicine. Starting my mornings off with deep breathing, away from all the screens, tending to an organic garden, and walking my dogs deep into the forest.
