Womanly Interview: Isabella of Peel Dream Magazine, by Attia Taylor

Womanly Sounds is excited to share the newest release from Peel Dream Magazine, ‘Agitprop Alterna’. The album is a fun, dreamy, end of summer keep-sake holding their single, ‘Pill’, a song reminiscent of Grass Widow in their hay-day with long melodic and vocally layered tracks like that of Stereolab. It’s a feel-good splash back to the 90’s when life was much less contaminated. Watch their new video for ‘Pill’ and read our Womanly interview with Isabella of Peel Dream Magazine below: 

This sophomore LP pays homage to the fuzzy, mod-ish pop of acts like My Bloody Valentine and early Stereolab, but it’s also indebted to stateside bands like Yo La Tengo and Rocketship that were cut from a similar cloth. It’s part Chickfactor, part Space Age Bachelor Pad; a shambolic, drone-heavy brand of minimalism, filtered through a cross-section of classic indie pop.

What’s your favorite self care practice?

My favorite self care practice is exercise. I try to do all different types, but my favorite is my trampoline which we used in Peel Dream Magazines music video for ‘Pill’. I love that it detoxifies the body and I can bounce on it for hours while watching tv. It’s a perfect cool down after  an intense workout. I joke to my friends that I should be a trampoline salesperson because of how much I endorse it. 

How does making music impact your health? 

Writing and playing live music has greatly affected my sense of self worth. Without either of those things, I don’t think I would be generally happy. I’ve suffered from stage fright which has prevented me from pursuing my own solo work. I’m still learning to get better with the help of my friends and bandmates. Generally,  I feel more fulfilled when I’m writing my own songs and playing music with my friends. 

Who has taught you the most in life so far? 

It’s hard to answer that because there is not just one person. The values my parents have instilled in me are really important. My fiancé helps me a lot with building up self-confidence and he encourages me to pursue music as much as I can. But I have learned the most from myself - others have guided me in certain directions, but by being open and honest with myself and my feelings, learning from my own experiences, deciding what values I want to project, and  not becoming bitter by some of the horrible circumstances life brings has taught me the most. It’s really important to take care of yourself but to also not be selfish. I learn that from everyone in my life and use that to become the person I want to be. I’ll always be learning that.

What are your healthy living goals?

My healthy living goal is to make sure I’m nice to myself, which is something I still struggle to do. It’s easy to look at every flaw, anything that could make me feel insecure in both my personality and musically. The most important thing I can do to combat this is engage in positive self-talk, which can be extremely hard to do because I’m telling myself something that I might not believe when I’m sad. My goal is to eliminate these feelings as much as I can rather than give in to negativity.
