To give you the most relevant and timely health information for our fourth issue on Black Maternal Health, our team consulted with a group of civic advocates, health professionals, and art activists.

Corrine Y. Gordon is a visual artist and independent curator based in New York. She currently works in events and programming at Komuna and previously held positions at The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Apollo Theatre. We spoke with Corrine about her work and favorite daily health practices:

What are some of your favorite self-care practices?

I like to reserve Sundays for my personal TLC time. Whether that means getting my nails done, washing my hair, doing face masks, going to yoga, taking myself to brunch, or cleaning my house. It’s a day to meditate on self progress, to do the things that bring me joy, and it helps keep me focused in this world of distractions. But when it really comes down to it, I just love me some ME time.

What is your favorite healthy food or recipe?

My summer smoothie: spinach, pineapple, mango, ginger, flax seeds, and a little agave.

Who has taught you the most in life so far?

Easy—my family, especially my sisters. They have helped me recognize my own brilliance and always encourage me to live in my truth.

What are your healthy living goals?

My main goal is consistency in everything—consistency with my diet, physical activity, meditation, self awareness, relationships, and with the love I give.
